Plusoptix GmbH is a German company located in Nuernberg. Based on the research work at the university of ophthalmology in Tuebingen/Germany Plusoptix has acquired special expertise in R&D of binocular videoretinoscopy. As a result international patents were appointed and transferred into products. Products are like auto refractometers to screen infants and pre-school aged children and devices to measure binocular in real time refraction, accomodation and pupil size in photopic, scotopic and mesopic conditions. Customers are ophthalmologists, optometrists, pediatricians, eye hospitals as well as scientists.

Products available are auto refractors using a binocular video retinoscopy technique to measure refraction, accomodation and pupil size. This technique consits in illuminating the retina with infrared light from one meter distance and recording the reflected light with a video camera. A computer program evaluates the recorded pictures in real time and displays the results on the screen immediately.

plusoptix S04 - professional amblyopia screening for Babies

Why vision screening?

According to the Vision in Preschoolers Study (http://www.nei.nih.gov) vision disorders are the fourth most prevalent class of disability in the United States and the most prevalent handicapping conditions in childhood. Limited vision hinders a child's academic performance, athletic accomplishment, and professional perspectives. Many vision disorders may be cured successfully if detected and treated early but only 14% of preschool children receive a comprehensive eye exam. Vision screening provides basic prevention of amblyopia and assures that low vision due to refractive error and strabismus is not hindering mental and physical development to the remaining 86% of all children.

Why screening Babies?

Amblyopia can be prevented if the causes, i.e. refractive error and/or strabismus, are detected and treated early. A British study (British Medical Journal 324, 29 (2002)) shows that treatment success declines considerably after the age of three years.

Key Features:
  • Binocular measurement: Both eyes are measured simultaneously and therefore anisometropia is detected.
  • Non-invasive measurement: No eye drops (cycloplegia) are needed to obtain a measurement.
  • Non-contact alignment: The baby is seated relaxed on the laps of one parent and the measurement is taken from one meter distance (approx. 3 ft.).
  • Measurement in a split second: It takes less than a second to obtain measurements (refraction in sphere, cylinder and axis, pupil diameter, inter occular distance and gaze direction) and the screening result pass or refer.
  • Easy to use: The device is one-button-controlled and all measurement procedures are pre-programmed (autoshot) so that it can be used by qualified staff.
  • Documentation: Each measurement is saved as a video file. Measurements and screening result can be printed in a "Screening Certificate" for parents records. Measurements can be printed on a self adhesiv label for doctor paper files or exported into patient computer database.

  • Dynamic of accomodation: Targets are offered at different distances to the eyes. The change in accomodation is measured in real time during the measurement process.
  • Dynamic of pupil sizes: The size of the pupils can be measured in photopic, skotopic and mesopic conditions.
  • Center of ablation: The reflex on the cornea is determined in relation to the underlaying pupil indicating the gaze direction of both eyes.
  • Inter occular distance: The distance between both eyes is measured.
  • Documentation of the measurements: All measurements can be saved as video files and exported into a Microsoft Excel spread sheet.

Information for parents

You can see your baby. Can your baby see you?

Did you know that Babies need to learn seeing as they learn walking and talking? Parents monitor their baby’s progress in walking and talking every day. They are near by in order to prevent it from falling during the first uncertain steps and they wait impatiently to hear the first syllables and words “mum” and “dad”.

But parents can neither see nor hear nor feel if vision (i.e. to seeing clearly with both eyes) is developing age appropriately or a vision disorder arises. Vision disorders reduce vision in later life and there is evidence that children having undetected vision disorders are more likely to fail at school.

Good vision is extremely important throughout lifetime for adults gathering 70% of all information through the eyes and many professions being restricted to applicants without vision disorders. The eyes are the most used sense of mankind.
